America's far right was never new, only dormant, a deep current of nativism, racial backlash, and anti-government paranoia waiting for a vehicle. The Tea Party gave it organization after 2009, but it took a reality-television showman to give it a face. Donald Trump understood instinctively what career politicians never grasped, that resentment is a renewable resource and that shamelessness is a superpower in an age of outrage media. He descended his golden escalator calling Mexican migrants rapists, demanded that Muslims be barred from the country, and discovered that every taboo he broke only bound his followers closer to him. His movement swallowed the QAnon cult whole and mainstreamed the great replacement fantasy that inspired massacres in Pittsburgh, El Paso, and Buffalo. When he lost in 2020 he simply declared reality itself fraudulent, and thousands stormed the Capitol on the strength of his lie. Returned to power in 2025, he governs as he campaigned, pardoning the rioters as patriots, purging the state of the disloyal, hunting migrants with masked agents, and treating courts and the press as enemies to be broken rather than institutions to be obeyed.
