Returned to power in 2025, he governs as he campaigned, pardoning the rioters as patriots, purging the state of the disloyal, hunting migrants with masked agents, and treating courts and the press as enemies to be broken rather than institutions to be obeyed.

The core never changed, France for the French first in jobs, housing, and welfare, and Islam cast as an occupation, a comparison she herself once drew to the Nazi years. Her genius was patience, presenting herself election after election as the calm defender of the forgotten while the center wore itself out. She was helped, paradoxically, by a rival further right, the television polemicist Éric Zemmour, a man collecting convictions for racial hatred the way others collect honors, whose talk of great replacement and remigration made Le Pen look moderate by comparison. She spoke of ethnic replacement and shipped asylum seekers to camps in Albania, yet once in power she proved the movement's most unsettling lesson, that a far-right leader who flatters NATO and manages the budget can win polite applause in every European capital while waging culture war at home.

He recast himself as the last defender of Christian civilization against a decadent West, banned what he called gay propaganda, jailed feminist punks for a prayer in a cathedral, and elevated mystic imperialists like Alexander Dugin who dream of a Eurasian empire rising on liberalism's grave. Crimea in 2014 and the full invasion of Ukraine in 2022 were sold in the language of blood, destiny, and denazification, while at home opponents were labeled foreign agents, imprisoned, or buried, Alexei Navalny dying in an Arctic camp as the world watched. Abroad Putin invested in Europe's far right like a portfolio, a nine-million-euro loan to Le Pen's party, a friendship treaty with Austria's Freedom Party, warm channels to the AfD and the Lega, and troll farms whose fingerprints turned up as far away as the Romanian presidential election.

That should have been the end, and it was only an intermission. Herbert Kickl, the pale strategist who had written Haider's slogans in the back room, rebuilt the wreckage into something colder and harder, styling himself the people's chancellor in deliberate echo of a title once claimed by Hitler, embracing the identitarian dream of remigration, recommending horse dewormer against Covid while denouncing pandemic policy as a system dictatorship, and musing that journalists and politicians would one day find themselves on wanted lists. In 2024 his party finished first in a national election for the first time in its history.

Geert Wilders turned himself into a political sect of one. His Party for Freedom has a single member, himself, an arrangement that spares him congresses, rivals, and dissent, and for two decades he has poured that total control into a single obsession, Islam, which he calls a fascist ideology and whose holy book he compares to Mein Kampf. He has demanded the closure of every mosque and Islamic school, proposed a tax on headscarves, and led a hall chanting for fewer Moroccans, which earned him a conviction for incitement. He lives under permanent guard because Islamists genuinely want him dead, and he has woven that martyrdom into his brand, the bleach-blond prophet persecuted for speaking truth. Shunned for years, he won a shock victory in 2023 when the center's cordon collapsed, froze his harshest demands, and lent his party to a government too fragile to survive him. In 2025 he detonated it over demands to seal the border and deploy the army against asylum seekers, and the voters who had lent him their anger took it back at the snap election.

Viktor Orbán began political life as a liberal firebrand demanding that Soviet troops leave Hungary, and he ended it as Europe's most skillful autocrat, which tells you everything about his one true conviction, power itself. Handed a constitutional majority in 2010 by an exhausted and corrupt left, he moved with the patience of an engineer, rewriting the constitution, packing the courts, buying up the media through friendly oligarchs, and redrawing the electoral map until losing became nearly impossible. What made him the prophet of the international right was his honesty about the project; he called his creation an illiberal democracy and dared Europe to stop him. His regime ran on manufactured enemies, migrants portrayed as invading hordes, the elderly Jewish financier George Soros grinning from thousands of billboards as the puppet master of it all, and finally the warning that Hungarians must not become a mixed-race people. Brussels financed him, conservatives excused him, and American admirers made pilgrimages to Budapest, until in 2026 his own voters, tired of corruption and decay behind the patriotic scenery, ended the era after sixteen years.
